Yee Haw! Our Cowgirl is FIVE!

Mary Claire's 5th birthday party was a BOOT-SCOOTIN' good time!:)
When I set out to plan the party, I knew that this theme was the one for Mary Claire. Mary Claire has recently informed us that she wants to be a cowgirl when she grows up.:) So, you see, a cowgirl party was perfect. And the only HITCH in the plans was the rain which kept this from being an outside event, but even that couldn't throw a damper on our baby girl turning 5!
Warning! Picture overload!

The tables and chairs for guests.
Sorry, I should have taken a picture up close with tin buckets, burlap, and cowhide tissue paper for centerpieces. Balloons were weighted down inside tin buckets.

The "Watering Hole" with IBC Root Beer, Cream Soda, water and sodas.

The "Sweet Saloon" with the cake made by my friend, Christi.

Thank you, Christi! The cake was awesome!

Horse and cow cake pops turned out super cute! I did not make them, however I used a gift certificate I had gotten, and they were such a cute addition to the party.
"Happy Trails" table where guests made their own trail mix. It was so funny to see some of the kids running back and forth between playing and grabbing a handful of M&M's from the table!:) I kept going back and forth to the bowl of chocolate covered raisins...Can we say addicted?!

Bags for the trail mix!
Trying to get my cowhands to pose for one picture...

Yee Haw!!
The only picture with me in it.
My Aunt Dinah, me, Grandmother Caudle ("Jenny"), and Mimi

Faith, Mary Claire and Ema Li having fun posing for the camera!
This was a BIG hit! We had a pony and cart ride for the kids and the rain held off. This is Lane, Mrs. Bebe, Kate and Mary Claire takin' a ride.

(Sorry, my camera fogged up from the humidity.)
Mary Claire, the birthday girl, and Mrs. Bebe being pulled by "Bella", the pony.
Some other party details I want to remember from this special celebration. (Mostly borrowed from Pinterest, I assure you.)

Food table where we served Barbeque and chicken
Happy birthday to my little cowgirl!
Happy and safe trails to you!
Thank you to all of our friends who came and helped celebrate!

MIM Triathlon

Well, May 18th finally arrived!! The day I have dreaded anticipated since January! I could hardly sleep the night before as I lay in my hotel bed thinking about a myriad of things...What was the temp of the water in the lake I was about to swim in, what if something goes wrong with my bike, what if I can't run after completing the first 2 events, UHHH!!! I haven't practiced fully completing all three events in sequence???? Was I truly prepared?!

My brain wouldn't stop. I felt comfort knowing that my family was there with me. I convinced myself that no matter what it took, I was going to finish the race. "Time doesn't matter. Just finish," I repeatedly told myself.

The next morning, I escaped "Mom Mode" and left my sleeping family in their hotel beds. I went out early to set up my bike in the transition area. I tried to shift into "Race Mode". Just call me Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. That's when the butterflies began to flutter.:) I looked around at the other competitors and wondered if the look on my face screamed, "This is my first triathlon!"

I am thankful for the girl next to me from Illinois who gave me a few pointers after I told her it was my first time. (I am sure I didn't have to tell her, but she was nice enough to wait and let me say the words.) I followed her example of how to lay things out on the ground next to my bike, and asked her where to get my race numbers written on my body, and exactly what things could disqualify a person from the race. Would crawling across the finish line DQ me?! How about piggyback swimming? My kids do it to me all the time?! :)
Do you think she could tell that I had not REALLY read the fine print in my packet? I am somewhat notorious for that, especially when I'm nervous.

After I had prepared my gear, I headed back up to the hotel room to check on everyone else. Back in "Mom Mode". Kids dressed, hair brushed, etc. (My mother was very helpful with Mary Claire.) Jan managed to snap one shot of me prior to the race. Not the best, but hey, it partially proves this story.:)

That's me! #1457 in the hideous tri-suit! (I didn't have to change between events. This suit can be worn for all three events. Simplicity...)

Back downstairs, I tried to get into "Race Mode". I lined up with the hundreds of others waiting to get in the COLD water, and kept repeating to myself, "Just gotta finish, just gotta finish."
The swim wasn't pretty at all, and not near what I expected of myself. Jan says I am a good swimmer and he's watched me practice some this winter, but I panicked when I swallowed a lot of lake water as I started, and I couldn't seem to get in a groove after that. I would have swam freestyle the whole way and probably would have done it in about 10 mins, but I ended up doing mostly breaststroke and side strokes when I needed to, and it took me about 13 1/2 mins. I will not lie, I was extremely disappointed in my swim and I slightly felt as if I had let my husband and parents down as they cheered me on from the bank of the lake. But I was determined not to quit!
I finished the swim and moved as fast as I could to my bike. I exchanged my swim cap and goggles for my t-shirt, helmet, socks and shoes, and ran my bike out of the transition area. As I exited the area, my mom and Mary Claire were standing by the fence and yelling for me. I could have cried right there. Especially after THAT SWIM!!:)
I started the 12 mile bike, and it was good to be on the bike and put the swim behind me. I got my mind back in it.
About 40-45 mins later, I was back in the transition area for the LAST event. Let me tell you, if you have never ridden a bike for several miles and then jumped off and run, your legs almost feel like they are gonna fall out from under you.:) It is a weird feeling. Jan and Jonah yelled for me as I took off for the 3 mile run! It was good to hear their voices.

Headphones are not allowed, and I typically run with music playing in my ears. I'll be honest, running without music is hard for me. I decided I'd just sing to myself.  For some reason, How Great Thou Art was the song that I went with. I prayed for/thought about friends that I knew were going through hard, scary times and I prayed for my own family. I watched carefully for the mile markers and then the finish line.
And then there it was!
I finished my first sprint triathlon in 1:36:00. Not the best time, but a time to work on maybe.
Not sure yet if more triathlons are in my future, but the feeling of accomplishing one is pretty good.:)

After food and a shower, I quickly shifted back into "Mom Mode".:) A funny, but true, thought occurs to me here..."Mom Mode" is very similar to being in "Race Mode" at times. There are times, as a mom, that I get frustrated, scared, or even disappointed, but I can't and I won't give up. Even when it gets hard. I will do whatever it takes to be the type of mother my children need me to be. I won't be perfect, and I probably won't win any 1st, 2nd, and heck, even 3rd place awards, but I'll pray that my reward is in far greater things.
Being a mom is the best prize (and challenge) I've ever been given!
I will run with endurance the race set before me...

Happy 10th Birthday!

Where did 10 years go?

John Owen's cake

Not quite in character for "Mighty Minds", but the show hadn't started yet.:)
Abby is seated behind him, and these 2 have been in the same class since Kindergarten. Sadly, Abby is moving to another local elementary school next year. We are going to miss her terribly!

The birthday cupcake magnet...The way we countdown to each person's birthday!
My new reality is that my "baby" is not a baby anymore!
He is a wonderful, smart, talented, handsome young man and it hit me like a ton of bricks last night! I cried right there in the store as I looked at birthday cards! (What a scene that must have been!)
We have officially entered into the double digits!

Here's some pictures of John Owen's 10th birthday celebration with his friends.
Sleepover with his special request for catfish to eat. Yes, catfish!!
Ice cream sundae bar!

Yummy!

Next day, a trip to Incredible Pizza with friends!

Carter cheering John Owen on as he spins the prize wheel.:)

Happy to have a card to play all those video games!

Hutch, John Owen, and Tucker getting ready for Lasertag.

I hope you had a wonderful 10th birthday celebration, John Owen!
We are so proud of you and the young man you are becoming.
May you always know our love for you and more importantly, God's love for you.
Happy birthday!
Love,
Momma

2013 Go Lucy Go 5k

This was the third year we have held the Go Lucy Go 5k in Covington in honor of our dear friend, Lucy Krull. The best news that I can share is that Lucy is cancer free! God is good!

The race was a HUGE success and I enjoyed working with Laura and Kate in making this an event that the whole community enjoyed. We had close to 600 in the 5k and about 100 kids in the Kids Fun Run. Astounding numbers for a small town race!:)

We raised over $25,000 for LeBonheur Children's Hospital!!
Go Lucy Go!
May we run with endurance the race set before us...

I want to say a special thanks to my family for being patient and cooperative as I worked on this event. It takes a lot of time and commitment and sometimes stresses a full time working mom out, but the end result is such a reward! Thanks to my parents for chipping in and helping to take care of the kids when I needed you. Especially, thank you to Jan for making sacrifices to allow me to go to meetings and be in the places I needed to be to make this happen. I love you all!

Little race tidbit:
Jonah ran in the 5k and won 3rd place in the 9 and under age group! Way to go, Jonah!

Our First Field Trip

Last week, I went with Mary Claire on her first "official" preschool field trip! We had such a great time! There were enough chaperones for her class that I only had Mary Claire to walk around with all day. I couldn't believe it! I think the last time I had only one child to look after at the zoo was when John Owen was 15 months old. And he'll be 10 yrs. old next week! Here's some favorite pictures from our day at the zoo:

Feelin' "catty" in Cat Country!

Strike a pose!

Can you guess what she said when she saw this? hehe

The prettiest panda EVER!!

She loved riding the camel named "Cotton"!

Couldn't resist this photo...

And she insisted on taking my picture! :)

Great memories made with my little girl!

Easter 2013

Ah, yes! Here we are...all happy, happy happy!:)
Mary Claire wasn't into looking at the camera too much in the picture above.

But in this one, she is POINTIN' TO JESUS!
He is RISEN!!
(While Jan's eyes are closed and Jonah cuts his eyes at his sister.)
Oh, the anatomy of the family Easter picture!
I'll spare you the other shots taken. hehe

We had a wonderful spring break week and Easter weekend. Very relaxed, no where to be really, and did pretty much what we wanted to. We still had swim team practice and a short orthodontic appt. for Mary Claire, but overall, a FREE from school/work schedule.
Here's some pictures that tell some of the story of our 2013 Spring Break and Easter:

We made resurrection rolls and read scripture from the Bible as we made them.

This was a special gift that was given to us when we lost Jan's mother in June 2010.
I leave it out all year, but it was a focal point of our Easter decorations.
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – John 20:26-29

Of course, the secular part of Easter is fun, too!

In the top left hand corner of these shelves are two of my favorite Easter decorations. The cross with nails and a smaller wrought iron cross a special friend gave to me when my grandmother passed away.

My favorite bunny with his carrot sweater.:)
I think I've had him for 20 years.

Our Easter candy jars with the book I am currently reading on the counter. It's The Whole Bible Story, and so far, I am enjoying it. Truth be told, I left in on the counter so that I would not forget to read a page or two everyday. My plan hasn't worked out perfectly, but I am slowly getting it read.
And for the candy, we are finally down to the last of the Starburst jellybeans! Oh my goodness!
I really think I need intervention when Easter rolls around every year and they put these jellybeans out at Wal-Mart!!I think I haven't eaten my weight in these! They are addictive...

Dyeing Easter eggs in our pajamas!

John Owen gives this dyeing thing a "thumbs up"!

Thursday night, our friend, Hutch, came to spend the night and we had a glow in the dark egg hunt!
Loads of fun!

Bunnies in a cup! (Pudding with coconut wafers, strawberry icing and jellybeans...super easy!)

Easter Sunday at Aunt Dinah's

I love this picture!
Does it remind you of The Christmas Story?:)
Aunt Dinah has this tradition of having the youngest child wear the pink bunny suit. Mary Claire wasn't the youngest one there, but she put the suit on...for a few minutes anyway.

Jonah "hopped" around in the bunny ears. Something tells me if the pink bunny suit would have fit him, he'd have put it on, too!

My grandmother and me
I hope you all had a wonderful Easter!
His is Risen!
